In 1990 the choir hosted the very first BFYC (The British Federation of Young Choirs – now called youngchoirs.net) choral weekend in the Borough Hall under the direction of Peter Fletcher. In 1992 the choir was the first British Representative in the 16th World Assembly of Choirs in Jerusalem, an event that attracts choirs from all over the world.
In 1994 the choir took part in the Europa Cantat 12 in Herning, Denmark, singing the Dream of Gerontius under Laszlo Heltay.
1995 was a very significant year for the choir. We celebrated our Silver Jubilee. This was marked by a concert in our Borough Hall, attended by the town’s dignitaries, and of course many members of the public. For the second half of the concert many former members of the choir joined us on stage. The event was rounded off with a Civic Reception for the choir, given by the Mayor.
The choir also took part in VE Day celebrations at Darlington Football Ground, and attended Radio Cleveland event for Children In Need.
1996 saw the choir taking a major part in the Loughborough Singing Week. This was also the year in which Chris Simmons was appointed as a director of the British Federation of Young Choirs.
In the summer of 1997 we took part in a singing festival in Tarragona, Spain, under the batons of Jordi Casas y Beyer and Lazlo Heltay.
The choir performed at the 100th Anniversary Concert of the Town Hall Hartlepool which took place on Tuesday, 30th September – a very significant event in the town. The choir also performed, by request, at the retirement party of Fred Chapman – Warden of Carlton Outdoor Centre. The Carlton Outdoor Centre holds many memories for members of the choir, as it was the annual base for intensive rehearsals prior to the Christmas schedule of concerts. The Choir and Parents’ Association presented him with a gift of a framed picture by Hartlepool artist, George Colley.
1997 was also the year in which the training choir was started. This was an entirely new venture for all involved, and proved to be a great success.
In 1998 the choir was asked to perform in the National Association of Choirs Choral Spectacular in Newcastle City Hall. The concert was a huge success and we received a very complimentary letter from the Secretary.
1999 saw another visit to Loughborough for the triennial Singing Week.
