The choir returned to the International Choral Competition in Celje, in the former Yugoslavia again in 1981, took joint first place with the Russian State Youth Choir and came away with the gold medal. In 1982 the choir took the international stage in Neerpelt, Belgium in the European Youth Choral Competition and we were again awarded 1st prize.
In 1984 the choir arrived in Leningrad for a ten-day tour in Russia giving concerts in Leningrad, Gorky Park, Tallinn (now the capital city of Estonia) and Moscow. In 1985 the choir took first prize at the Sacred Mixed Choral Class and second prize in the Open Choral Class of the 82nd Morecambe Festival.
In 1986 the choir was invited to take part in a concert tour of Europe, giving concerts in Budapest, Vienna, Prague and Wraclaw. This invitation was made by the world famous Bela Bartok Choir from Budapest who had stayed with us the previous summer. In 1987 the choir made two appearances on the ITV programme “Highway” and three appearances on the BBC programme “That’s Life”.
The first of these appearances was a draughty affair. The girls of the choir appeared in their uniform tops and bloomers! It was a campaign to find more of the material so they could have skirts to match the tops! Luckily a supplier was found!
In 1987 the choir was the first British choir to be elected to membership of Europa Cantat.
Easter 1989 saw the choir return to America, in an extensive tour of the east coast.
